Leonela entered US last year 8 months pregnant and with a 3 yr old son. She needed prenatal care and turned to the Women’s Health program at Sun River Health to have her pregnancy monitored and attain all of the necessary testing to ensure she and her baby were healthy. Leonela experienced abuse at the hands of her child’s father and was forced into sex trafficking in her home country. She was homeless when she was connected with Sun River Health and her son, who had serious health issues, was also in need of medical care. Leonela was provided with the care she and her family needed and was so impressed with the attention that was taken at her prenatal appointments. She was referred to partnering organizations for social support to assist her outside of the health center, including a shelter for her and her children to stay in while she established herself here.
When asked about her experience with Sun River Health, Leonela said “My journey here was long and hard. I was treated with respect by my doctors and everybody helped me with a lot of support when I had to be hospitalized with hemorrhaging after the birth of my daughter. I would make the journey again to reach caring people like those who helped me at Sun River Health – I don’t know what my children and I would have done without them. ”
